Baseball double-header ends in sweep for Delaware Tech Roadrunners

By Bryce Evans

The Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus baseball team scored a pair of victories Sept. 28, sweeping a doubleheader with Burlington County College by scores of 4-1 and 10-1.

Due to the size of each school, there were two games, played by two different groups of players in a split-squad format.

Defense of both teams kept the first game scoreless until BCC plated a run in the top of the fourth inning.

Head coach of the Roadrunners Curtis Brock said he is expecting for the first group to hit the ball a little better.

“Our approach is at the plate,” Brock said. “We need to try to swing at some better pitches.”

In the bottom of the sixth, the Roadrunners brought in two runs with a ground ball hit out to left field with runners on second and third, bringing them both in.

With one last chance to score, the Roadrunners brought in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, ending the first game with an impressive comeback of 4-1.

Chris Huk, pitcher for the Roadrunners, said the comeback led to an exciting victory.

In the second game, BCC drew first blood, bunching four hits for the game’s first run.

The Roadrunners answered, scoring a run on base hits that plated Roadrunners loading the bases, getting five base hits and bringing one runner in. In the top of the second, the Roadrunners defense learned from the first inning and shut BCC out with a strikeout and two thrown out attempts at stealing second base.

In the bottom of the second, the Roadrunners scored another run as a result of a runner on second base and the next batter hitting a double.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Roadrunners had a great inning leaving BCC in the dust, and the spectators cheering. The Roadrunners scored four consecutive runs all with balls hit out to left field leaving the bases loaded and an amazing-play-waiting-to-happen type of vibe on the field.

With two outs, and an already impressive six-point lead, Erving Nazari, first baseman, stepped up to bat. Nazari hit the first ball that came over the plate deep into right field. BCC had trouble controlling the ball while all three runners on base got to home and Nazari got to second base.

Stephen Solomon, pitcher for the Roadrunners, said “The best play was definitely when Irving brought in three runs.”

The last inning was a quick inning with a great amount of pop flies caught in left field resulting in a finishing score of 10-1.

“We've done a lot of hitting here this week and a lot of defense work,” Coach Brock said, “It all seems to be paying off.”

The next home game from now will be Saturday, October 12.
