Annual Mardi Gras celebration held on Owens Campus
By Jo Sheldon
With “Drew’s Famous Mardi Gras Party Mix CD” playing and the dining hall decorated with masks, beads, and doubloons, students and faculty came together to celebrate Mardi Gras at Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus on Feb. 12.
The Mardi Gras event is organized each year by Dr. Peter Meirs, who was unfortunately sick this year. The staff in charge was the Education Club, the Performing Arts, and the Student Government Association.
The hall was decorated with holiday colors of green, purple, and gold. All three colors have a specific meaning, green represents faith; purple stands for justice, and gold stands for power.
Students were able to sign up for a ticket that was entered into a cake drawing and could pay $1 to receive a coupon for the Lighthouse Cove.
Megan Cordrey, Early Childhood Education student, and Tom Schatzman, Elementary Education student, were in charge of handing out the beads and masks.
“Campus seems to be more busy Wednesday through Friday.” Schatzman said. “We’ve had this event in the past, but it seems less popular having it in the beginning of the week.”
Laura Gagnon, a member of the SGA, arranged seven gift bags on a table with times written on the front in 15-minute increments. Every 15 minutes, two tickets were pulled for chances to win a free cake.
“The lucky ticket drawn from the last bag is a winner of a large cake, called a King Cake,” Gagnon said.
A King Cake is a tradition in New Orleans beginning on Jan. 6, and ending on Fat Tuesday. The cakes are baked with a plastic baby inside and whoever finds it is expected to continue the festivities with another party and another cake.
Caitlyn Timko, MLT major and vice president of the SGA, was in charge of announcing the winners. The first two winners of the drawing were LaShae Parker and Victoria Bennett. The winner of the King Cake was a student, Morgan Sizer.
