A new Delaware band forming, getting started

By Shane Smith

The Delaware community is gaining another young rock band on the local music scene. A young and upcoming metalcore band formed in Seaford, Del, called When Stars Abandon Skies will be performing at various local venues in Sussex County, Del. during the summer. The band’s current lineup is Kenny DeVincentis, 19; Justin Towers, 23; Zack Longworth, 21; and Alex Tallent, 20.

DeVincentis, vocalist, said the band originally started out with its first lineup in January 2013 but had a falling out and disbanded three months later.

“We've been through a lot of drama last year,” DeVincentis stated. “This time, we’re being serious.”

The band has very interesting thoughts and feelings on music as a whole, especially from their own past experiences. Towers, lead guitarist and vocalist for the band, stated that the songs they write have a message that simply tells its listeners to stand up for themselves and to not allow anyone to control them. Towers explains that music has helped through various points in his past.

“Music has always been there for me,” stated Towers, lead guitarist. “It allows me to look back at my past mistakes with drugs, and those mistakes reminded me to never look back and never relive them.”

Longworth, rhythm guitarist for the band, stated that music always released him of stress after a long day of work. “There’s not a single care in the world once I plug in my headphones or play a riff on my guitar,” Longworth stated.

DeVincentis stated that music was his life-long dream career to pursue. He also explained that music was his life. “If there was no music,” DeVincentis began, “then we couldn’t truly express ourselves.”

Tallent, drummer for the band, commented that music is something that keeps him on his feet every day. “Music relieves me of the stress that I have to go through, day in and day out,” Tallent explained.

The entire band agrees that music is very important to focus on because of how they perceived music differently, especially to DeVincentis. “In my past experiences with bands,” DeVincentis began, “I've been in fights with the members, slacked off occasionally, and I would do things at the very last minute. If I could change how I acted back then and commit to the band now, then I think I could be a better musician.”

Towers, Longworth, and Tallent all share the idea that they have always been committed to the band, no matter what the circumstances were.

“I have always been committed to every project I've ever been a part of,” Tallent stated. “That will definitely not change.”

The band’s motivations in music include money, fame and respect from their peers. According to Longworth, his main motivation was to make his 16-month-old son, Carson, proud. “My son means the world to me,” Longworth commented. “He makes me happy to be a better and more mature person. He’s my inspiration to play music.”

According to the band, they are currently working on their first demo CD, and they hope to have it released in the summer of 2014. They expect that some shows will follow after the release of the CD.
